Main Street Historic Downtown Decatur was formed in 1984 as “The Downtown Area Revitalization Effort” or DARE. Once focused more on redevelopment, the program has since evolved to become an active merchants association, whose main purpose is to promote the downtown area.
Main Street Historic Downtown Decatur efforts have led to the restoration of Old State Bank and the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts. Other initiatives include annual events that bring an influx of shoppers and visitors to the downtown area. Main Street Historic Downtown Decatur currently receives support from the City of Decatur, the Main Street Program for the Alabama Historical Commission, the National Main Street Program, local merchants, and area residents.
Main Street Historic Downtown Decatur follows the Main Street Four Point Approach® as set forth by the National Main Street Program. More information about this approach and about the statewide Main Street program can be found on the
Alabama Historical Commission's website.
